Komangapik, Ruben Anton

Ruben Anton Komangapik, Inuit jeweller, sculptor, carver, metalworker, performing artist and musician, is fully engaged and enriched by art. He is best known for his unique jewellery and metalwork as well as his expressive sculptures.

Elijah, Michael

A carver all of his adult life, Michael was known for his sculptures of arctic wildlife, as well for his depictions of family, Inuit games, and “Owl Women” (serpentine owls with thick women’s braids). One of his sculptures was given as a gift by former Prime Minister Jean Chretien to Pope John Paul II during a visit to Canada.

Genaille, Steve

Steve Genaille is Swampy Cree from Northern Manitobah. He has been creating his own sculptures for 23 year and has carvings in private collections and galleries across the country and in private collections around the world. He was a featured artist at the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg and has taught to individuals and institutions across Canada.

“Everything that I’m doing is trying to capture some of the culture, about my traditions, simple things like hunting, wearing traditional clothing, harpoons, using legends. I feel that the only way we can preserve the culture is if people can see it.”

I see our ancestors moving in my mind and they are my real subject matter. I will only make what I know and recognize. That’s all that interests me. It must make sense as I wish to fool no-one. My works do not come from dreams. Dreams are partly nonsense, partly real. I consciously work on each image. I can’t really call it work, can I? Workers seem to live for paydays, making plans for the wages they’ll receive. I never know when I sell a piece or how much it will bring.
